COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the Certificate of Competency required by operators of:
Machinery on vessels less than 250kw-propulsion power in operations up to Offshore limits. (Within 200nm)
Machinery on vessels less than 500kw-propulsion power in operations up to restricted offshore operations (within 30nm)
COURSE DURATION:
9 day course + optional 1 day Oral Prep. Time is divided theory and practical sessions. MAST conducts oral assessment the week following.
PRE-REQUISITES FOR CoC ISSUE:
Minimum age 18 years.
QUALIFYING SEA-SERVICE FOR THE ISSUE OF CoC:
• An applicant shall have performed one of the following periods of approved sea service on vessels not less than 75 kilowatts propulsion power:
• 6 months sea service on the machinery of vessels of not less than 75kw propulsion power; OR
• 3 months sea service on the machinery of vessels of not less than 75kw propulsion power if a qualified Marine Fitter, Diesel/Motor Mechanic.
• Not more than 50 percent of the qualifying sea-service may be in outboard powered vessels.
• At least 50 percent of the total service shall be within the last 5 years.
• The period of qualifying service shall not include more than 33 percent of time spent in maintenance and refit
COURSE CONTENT:
- Demonstrate a practical knowledge of the operation of the mechanical equipment in the engine room of a small vessel with particular reference to:
- Marine motor engines and their fittings, shafting and propellers, preparing for use.
- Precautions necessary for the prevention of fire or explosion associated with the use of petrol, L.P. gas and distillate and with the charging of batteries.
- The action that should be taken in the event of fire or explosion, including the use of fire fighting appliances.
- Cooling water and fuel systems, bilge pumping arrangements including precautions against back-flooding.
- Care of low-voltage electrical systems, including batteries and accumulators.
- Fuel consumption; estimation and calculation.
- Communication knowledge, skills and attitude to write simple work related documents.
OUTCOME:
Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Marine Engine Driving – Grade 3) or a Statement of Attainment for the appropriate units from the above qualification from STT.
