COURSE DESCRIPTION:
There are several variations to the Coxswain ticket, from Sheltered Waters, Diesel Endorsement, 3 x 30 to Passenger Operations. Your area of operation determines what ticket and training you require.

OPERATIONAL AREAS:

Coxswain Restricted; to a maximum of sheltered waters as defined by Limits of Operational Areas by-law's. Vessel size - command a vessel up to 12 metres x 250kw (petrol motors only).

Coxswain Restricted 3 x 30 limits; to a maximum of 3 nautical miles seaward from the coast and 30 nautical miles along the coast from the point of departure. Vessel size - command a vessel up to 12 metres x 250kw (petrol motors only).

Coxswain Restricted Diesel Endorsement; to a maximum of sheltered waters as defined by Schedule 2 of MAST by-laws 2000. Vessel size - command a vessel up to 12 metres x 250kw. (petrol & diesel motors).

Coxswain; to a maximum of 15 nautical miles offshore and for passenger operation outside smooth waters. Vessel size – command a vessel up to 12 metres x 250kw (petrol & diesel motors).

PRE-REQUISITES:

SEA SERVICE:
An applicant is to produce evidence of sea service to the satisfaction of Marine and Safety Tasmania. Forms to produce this sea time are provided upon enrolment.
Coxswain Restricted: A minimum of 180 days sea service is required.
Coxswain 3x30: 180 days of sea service, 90 days must be beyond the limits of sheltered waters.
Coxswain: 360 days of sea service, 180 days must be beyond the limits of sheltered waters and in the last 5 years.

EYESIGHT TEST CERTIFICATE:
Certified by a qualified optometrist/medical practitioner. Candidate must pass an eyesight test and reach a satisfactory standard of both form and colour vision. A Certificate endorsed daylight use only will be issued to those persons who do not pass the above but otherwise meet the criteria.

MEDICAL FITNESS:
A self declaration of medical fitness from the applicant is required on the MAST form supplied. This is to be completed and signed by a JP or Commissioner of Declarations.
