COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the endorsement required by Coxswain Restricted Certificate of Competency (CoC) holders to operate a diesel powered up to a 12 metre vessel in Tasmanian waters.


COURSE DURATION:
3 Day course including assessment

PRE-REQUISITES:
The below pre-requisites are required ONLY if you are obtaining a diesel endorsement on your Restricted Coxswain or Limited Coxswain Certificate of Competency (CoC):
MAST application form (personal information only, no seatime required) signed by a JP or Commissioner of Declarations (supplied on the first day of the course).
Coxswain Restricted CoC (your diesel endorsement is stamped into this).
Please note if you have the old Limited Coxswain CoC a new certificate fee will apply

COURSE CONTENT:

Coxswain Engineering covers subjects that include:

    • A working knowledge of routine checks required with the operation of propelling machinery, ancillary equipment and other mechanical equipment in small vessels.
    • What to do in case of malfunction and emergencies.
    • Preparation for the use of such equipment.
    • Basic knowledge of the factors associated with the safe operation of propelling ancillary equipment.
    • Basic knowledge of water-cooling and bilge pumping arrangements in a small vessel.
    • Care and use of low voltage electrical systems on a small vessel including precautions necessary when charging batteries.
    • Fire prevention on a small vessel.
    • Action that should be taken in the event of fire or explosion.
    • Precautions necessary for the prevention of fire or explosion associated with use of petrol, LP gas and distillate and with the charging of batteries.
    • Knowledge of precautions to take when refuelling
    Written, practical and oral examinations are included.
