2009-09 September
Training Update
We are heading for yet another record year. Demand for courses in 2009 has in most cases exceeded the number of funded places available already! What that means is that one of the following scenarios will happen. STT obtains more funded places from TasSkills, we increase course prices or we subsidise the costs and leave prices as they are. We are in discussions with TasSkills re funding and have decided that, whatever the outcome, for the balance of 2009 we will leave prices as they are but can make no promises for 2010. We are optimistic that the State Government will see the good sense in appropriately funding Tasmania’s growing Seafood Industry. Tasmanian seafood production is now Australia’s most valuable and worth in excess of $475,000,000.
Productivity Places
STT were successful in winning a tender for 15 productivity places to provide Certificate III in the SFI (Seafood Processing) to the Aquaculture industry. Our industry partner is Huon Aquaculture, Australia’s second largest salmonid company and a company with a rapidly growing processing workforce. The training involves delivery on and off the job at both Dover & Strahan. Training commenced 23rd August and will take between one and two years to complete. The program is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Tasmanian Governments.
Wader Safety
We have about 20 places remaining for the year. This course should be compulsory for anyone using waders! The course was developed after a series of fatalities in the shellfish industry about 20 years ago. It has been revised many times and the current one day format with its practical and theory sessions is the best yet. Enrol now!
Master 5 and MED 3
The demand for these qualifications has been increasing every year since 2002. 32 Master 5 and 27 Med 3 candidates have just completed their training and will hopefully be in receipt of their tickets before the end of the year. (Depending on successfully meeting the requirements for sea time and Orals)
Aquaculture Trainees
We have over 120 trainees undertaking the Certificate III in the Seafood Industry (Aquaculture). They are employed on salmonid farms, shellfish farms and hatcheries right around the State. Part of managing their traineeships involves regular visits from STT staff to monitor their progress, and conduct assessments. Our training manager James Garde together with our new training officer Matt Jones have just completed one of their round the state road trips visiting our clients. This was a great opportunity to catch up with not only the trainees and their supervisors but also on the latest work practices and equipment used on the farms.
Keith Cripps Scholarships 2009
Applications are now closed and a short list of 7 finalists has been selected. The winners will be announced in the next edition of Fishing Today
2010 Training
Our course schedule for 2010 is now available. We strongly advise you to consider booking a place now especially if you’re interested in either Master 5 or MED 3. Both these qualifications were over subscribed in 2009 and unfortunately some people were turned away.
New Room
STT have recently commissioned a new class room. This will cater for our growth and allow for less cramped conditions. It will be available for rent when not used for training. Enquiries to Karyn on 0362336442
