Coxswain program for Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre
The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre has a land management program in operation in the Furneaux Islands. Based on the management of five Aboriginal-owned Bass Strait lands, the program addresses the biodiversity, community development and cultural activities of the islands. STT has worked with TAC to train nine Aboriginal staff up to coxswain level so they can safely operate their work vessels. Training took place mostly on Clark Island (Lungtalanana) and in Hobart. The experience was a rewarding one for our trainers and for the students involved. The Equity Support Branch of Skills Tasmania generously funded the program.
Fire safety and evacuation procedures
STT staff recently undertook training in evacuation procedures and fire training. After a full review of fire safety and staff training exercises, our clients can feel a little safer in our hands.
Training update
Demand is starting to exceed the number of funded places available for many courses. MED3 and Master 5 intakes are full for 2009 so enrol now for next year. We still have vacancies for our September Coxswain courses in Hobart and St Helens, so get in quickly to avoid disappointment. Our next Wader Safety course also has subsidised places available.
Tasmanian Seafood Awards 2009
Congratulations to TSIC for organizing another great awards night. We were very pleased to win the Seafood Training Award for the second time. The Award acknowledges the effort put in by all our staff, board members and most of all, recognises our industry support. Thanks!
Young Achiever Award
Seafood Training Tasmania sponsored the Award’s Young Achiever category and the well-deserved winner was Joe Bennett from Get Shucked on Bruny Island. Joe was once a trainee of ours and it is especially pleasing to see him win this Award.
Deckhands DVD
Following the successful launch late last year of our Safety at Sea DVD we have started developing our Deckhands DVD, which will provide an introduction for new deckhands to vessels. Hopefully, it will be part of the induction kit for all skippers. As before, Rosny College will provide the actors, filming, production and direction etc. with the industry providing vessels and equipment. STT will fund and manage the project with the launch planned for late 2009.
Keith Cripps Scholarship 2009
Please see the advertisement in this issue of Fishing Today for scholarship details. Applications close on 4 September 2009.
